In the case between several police officers (notably Chief Inspectors and Inspectors of Police, such as D. B. L. C. Seneviratne and others) and the Inspector General of Police, Ministry of Defence, and the National Police Commission, the court addressed the legality and fairness of promotional processes to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police. The main issues examined were the conversion of written examination marks from an initial total of 600 to 500, deviation from the prescribed ratio between exam and interview scores, the use of both converted and raw mark sheets, and appointment decisions exceeding available vacancies.
